Chapter 18

"Are you sure this is the right address?"

"Yep. This is it," Charlie said when Dan pulled up to the warehouse. He parked on the street and examined the site. A tall chain-link fence surrounded the building with No Trespassing signs tacked on every hundred feet. A heavy chain wrapped around the gate, secured by a huge padlock.

Just down the street, Charlie spotted Will’s Mustang.

“That’s Will’s car.” She climbed out of the Tahoe and stared at the building for a moment. Even without her psychic abilities, she could feel dark energy emanating from the walls and windows. She noticed a red sticker on the window of the front door.

Dan moved to the back of the truck and opened the rear door with his remote. Charlie joined him, in the dim light glow of the interior light, watched him put on a bulletproof vest and a tactical vest with a patch on it that read Sheriff in white letters.

He loaded the pockets with extra magazines of ammunition for his weapon and shells for a shotgun. Then he checked the weapon on his hip and unlocked a rack installed along the inside of the Tahoe’s back cabin. He grabbed a mean, oily-looking shotgun, opened it, and dropped five shells into the chambers.

"What does that red sticker mean?” Charlie pointed to the front door.

"It means this building is condemned. Probably damaged in the last hurricane.”

“Figures,” she muttered.

“You know, I’d really feel better if you’d wear this.” He took an extra vest from the stockpile of paraphernalia in the back and handed it to her.

“Are you planning to shoot me?” She held it in her hands and felt the weight of it. “It’s lighter than it looks.”

“I just don’t want either of us to get hurt.”

Charlie laid the vest down in the back of the truck. “I’m more worried about their teeth and their speed than I am about getting shot. But I appreciate the sentiment. And for the record, I don’t want us to get hurt, either.” She sighed and faced him. “You can still back out if you want. This is gonna be bloody and stinky and probably the worst thing you’ve ever encountered.”

“I did two tours in Iraq. I can handle this.” He placed a beefy hand on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze. The kindness in his smile belied a steely insistence in his demeanor. She pictured him in charge of his men during the war, his air of authority giving them confidence, daring them to brook his orders. She wasn’t going to talk Dan out of anything.

“Okay.” She nodded down the street. “Let’s go break into Will’s trunk. There’s stuff in there we’ll need.”

“Lead the way.” Dan gestured for her to go first and pressed the button on his remote. The liftgate lowered on its own, and he followed her to the Mustang parked down the street, holding his shotgun loosely in his hand.

Charlie pulled her wand from her purse and pressed the tip of it to the lock on the trunk of Will’s car.
